Raffle prizes required for pre-Christmas raffles

Please bring any raffle prizes to the Renal Unit and pass to the reception or one of the nurses. Any food items or gifts are appreciated, but please remember many people are on restricted diets, so don't tempt them with too many wine and chocolate gifts!

Three raffles are to be held, including one at the Christmas meal in December. (Sorry, there are no places left for the meal, which 50 people are currently signed up for.)

SCKPA-funded Beautician

Nikki Marshall has recently started holding beautician sessions at the haemodialysis unit for a couple of hours a week. Several patients have taken advantage of the manicures and hand massages. They have found that it helps to ease cramping and of course breaks up the dialysis sessions - which is always appreciated!

Nikki's company, Osprey Beauty and Aromatherapy is based in Swindon and offers additional treatments which you may be interested in, even if you are not a haemodialysis patient. Here are some example treatments and costs, but many more are available - please contact Nikki on 01793 320924

Treatment

Cost

Manicure, including hand & arm massage

£15.00

Luxury manicure, including hand & arm massage and paraffin wax treatment to soften dry skin

£20.00

Pedicure, including leg & foot massage

£15.00

The cost of a session during haemodialysis is funded by the SCKPA after the Oxford unit found it to be so successful. Patients are encouraged to be members of the kidney patients association, but will not be refused the treatment if they are interested.

NKF Press Release

"The NKF is incensed by the decision of NICE to turn down the Kidney Cancer drugs.  A campaign to fight this has
begun and NKF will be demanding an appeal in order to argue against the NICE decision.

Please approach your own MP about this dreadful decision.  We are also requesting all interested parties to write to NICE immediately.
Our website www.kidney.org.uk seen by 200,000 people each year, now has this banner message scrolling across its homepage in pride of place - it says :
"NICE ( National Institute for Clinical Excellence ) have announced that they will not agree to the NHS funding the four latest drugs to those patients suffering Cancer of the Kidney (Bevacizumab, sorafenib, sunitinib and temsirolimus).  THE NKF made a submission to NICE arguing that these drugs should be available - and will appeal against this decision. The NKF asks you to let NICE know your own views on this matter - please do this now. Write to "Renal Cell Carcinoma Appraisal", NICE, MidCity Place, 71 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6NA."

The National Kidney Federation represents 40,000 patients with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF), and a further 3 million with some form of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  All these people have reason to fear for their future. This decision by NICE is barbaric, damaging and unacceptable – it is as if NICE have no regard for their lives. If the NHS looks to bank balances before treating patients then it has truly lost its way.
The NKF is mustering its troops.
Ray Mackey
Chairman – National Kidney Federation"

The idea behind the work is to help raise awareness of the need for more donor organs.

If you can help, please e-mail Grace or phone her on 07767015428.

Christmas on a Renal Diet

Unfortunately, potassium restrictions still apply over the festive season! This information has been provided by Jane, dietitian at Swindon Unit.

One of the following can be exchanged for one of your fruit or veg portions. Try to limit yourself to just one of these foods daily:

1 small mince pie
1oz Christmas pudding
1oz Christmas cake

Instead of these potassium-rich festive foods, why not try using these recipes, which are much lower in potassium and just as tasty!

Live Life then Give Life Campaign

Transplants in Mind are currently supporting an Organ Donor Awareness T-shirt Campaign.

This campaign was the brainchild of Emily Thackray and Emma Harris, both of who suffer from Cysytic Fibrosis. Emily is currently awaiting a transplant and was given a year to live on 2 March 2005, unless she receives a life saving lung transplant.

The campaign which is being supported by Richard Madeley, Trisha Goddard, Kerry Katona, Max Clifford and David Gower can be found at www.livelifethengivelife.co.uk

Your support of this campaign would be very much appreciated in publicising the shortage of donor organs in the UK, and helping to save the lives of those awaiting a transplant, 400 of whom die every year whilst waiting for a suitable donor organ.
